It’s obviously an exceptional vineyard – planted in Blewitt Springs in 1952 – and this is obviously an exceptional wine. It has finesse, it has a certain something extra, its power is inherent, and it prosecutes its case through the finish. Its flavours, too, are not just fruit. This is a wine of mineral and smoke, meat and crushed red berries, dry leaves and sweet spices. It’s fractionally warm, but it carries it. And the finish is so juicy and sure that it makes you want to dive immediately back in for more. I’m sold. This is the goods. — Campbell Mattinson, Wine Front
Winemaking
Handpicked fruit is wild fermented with significant whole bunch, which builds the wine's frame. Neutral puncheons refine rather than flavour it, leaving structure and fine tannins with the depth to carry this Grenache for years in bottle.
The vineyard
The Trott Family Vineyard sits at 185 metres, the highest of our McLaren Vale sites, atop the deep sands of Blewitt Springs. The bush vine Grenache was planted in 1952 and has been dry grown by the Trott family for generations. That elevation drops the overnight temperatures and stretches the ripening window, so the fruit hangs longer and comes in with acidity intact. Yields are among the lowest we work with.
